Did you know Amsterdam has been a city of pilgrimage for centuries?
The First Supper invites you to together walk “Stille Omgang”, a late-night walk in the historic heart of Amsterdam. The walk honors the Miracle of Amsterdam that occurred in 1345, which turned Amsterdam into a destination of pilgrimage for centuries. The walk is a longstanding annual tradition attracting thousands of pilgrims from around the country who arrive by wheel and for quite a few from where they live… by foot.
This will be the second year The First Supper will be hosting a “Stille Omgang” event. The pilgrimage walk will be preceded by our pilgrim supper. Last year this took place at an Amsterdam family home. This time we will be hosting the dinner in the historic Christ Church building on Groenburgwal You will be welcomed at the table by Robert, founding host of The First Supper and members of The First Supper hospitality community. The dinner will include an interesting explanation of the story and significance of the Miracle and the development of Amsterdam as a pilgrimage destination that followed. Please be welcome at our table!
This supper will be an opportunity to meet up with locals and visitors from all backgrounds and nations, to connect, share stories, and listen to what brings us as modern day pilgrims to Amsterdam.
After supper together with many, many pilgrims from across the country we will walk in silence along key pilgrim sites (a.o. Begijnhof, the home where the Miracle took place, de Papegaai schuilkerk and Heilige Nicolaas kerk) in historic Amsterdam. Walking, praying, meditating as you wish in silence in the late Saturday evening in busy Amsterdam centre will be a special experience. An opportunity to contemplate on the conversations that took place over dinner, on the 2025 Stille Omgang, or the 750 history of Amsterdam more broadly.
Ready to be a pilgrim for an evening, and honour a centuries-old tradition?
