Our Community
A Table of Kindred Spirits
We are a group of Amsterdam-based locals, united by a heartfelt love for hospitality that transcends the church and religious beliefs. Inspired by the timeless principles of Christian camaraderie, we lay out a welcome mat for social events. We host walks, dinners and meetups in our historic venues and homes across Amsterdam.

Our Mission
Breaking bread, building bonds

Our mission is simple: to host a table where tales are told, bread is broken, and every guest leaves with a fuller heart. At The First Supper, merry-making and meaning mingle, inviting one and all to the unfolding story at our community table.
FAQs
While we'd love for you to just drop us a line and chat, we've noticed these questions keep cropping up:
The core is the connecting group conversation, the listening, the openly sharing of life and travel stories: At the table. For us the table stands for connection, and for community really. We connect over a home-cooked meal and the walk preceding it. At the table, you will meet the host, possibly some volunteers, locals and visitors alike, from all backgrounds. Very often guests and hosts spend time cooking and preparing the table together. There is time for reflection, laughter, learning and hearing insider stories. The best evenings tend to be concluded with music, singing, a host or guest having brought an instrument and a genuine goodbye but not farewell
The hospitality is provided by local volunteers. We kindly ask you to consider the cost of the home cooked food and drinks our hosts incur (we will be transparant about them at our events), or more generally consider what you value or can afford. The First Supper is a ‘not for profit’: Any proceeds beyond expenses incurred go to charity and support those in need in Amsterdam.
What binds us as a welcoming community is the love of Christ we found in ourselves for all locals and visitors, folks on a journey no matter who you are or where you come from. We completely respect your personal journey and provide a welcoming space for it to unfold. Everybody is welcome. We hope you are interested in some of our traditions and our personal stories, but do not expect ‘preaching’. We prefer authentic and honest personal stories, good laughter and genuine connection. We hope we will make new friends as well allowing us one day to visit your home and city when we are travelling.
As a community, we boast welcoming homes belonging to individuals, families, students, anybody really as long as they relish inviting guests to their tables, to offer a home away from home really with a true interest to support you on your way. Additionally, we have steward organisations such as historic places and churches, and contemporary cultural and social impact venues that open their doors to larger group dinners and gatherings. Typically, the event unfolds in the evening across various neighbourhoods in Amsterdam.
Well, the best way to connect with the story of the city and others you haven’t met before is joining by yourself. Always you will find unexpected gifts in other people you meet at the table. So we prefer you join by yourself, but we also welcome couples and friends, but never more than two people that know each other already. As long as you share the intent to connect with others and not make it an evening for your friends or family, we’re good.
Everybody is welcome. Please join us with the intent to be open, to go off the grid (as a good tradition we disconnect from our mobiles), and meet other people. We do not enter into arguments, we do not judge, we genuinely listen with interest and respect. We want to see who you really are. We open a safe space, both at the table and during our walks, which is inviting to further both your outer (Amsterdam discovery) and inner (personal discovery) journey.
Absolutely. Everybody is welcome. Anybody who is looking for genuine connection, with an interest in the untold stories and in seeing a different side of Amsterdam, in meeting others and making new friends, in a space where traditions like reflection, conversation and sharing a meal together help in deepening understanding. In fact we would like to see the First Supper grow into a community of locals, always with seats at the table for (returning) visitors.
You are welcomed by a Christian community so expect us to open and close dinner with a prayer that is helpful and respectful no matter who you are and what you may or may not believe in. We may share a short biblical text that supports our walk of life, or more likely share a personal testimonial on faith and walk of life. As a rule as hosts we are not here to preach but rather to support and stimulate a wonderful evening, walk and group discussion where stories are shared and glasses are raised.
The founder, Robert, walked the Camino to Santiago de Compostela in late 2022. During his pilgrimage he found shelter at a warm-hearted Christian hospitality community along The Way. Sharing life stories and a meal (a first supper really…) at the table with pilgrims of all backgrounds and nations, staying over and slowing down, reconnecting and listening, he felt the love of Jesus coming through. Here he felt called to in Amsterdam establish a welcoming contemporary hospitality community with Jesus in the heart. A community with an authentic passion for hospitality, listening and sharing of stories that want to be told. Wanting to bring all kinds of people together at the table, as part of walking and exploring the city. The First Supper: A warm-hearted community of homes and venues, locals supporting folks visiting or living in Amsterdam that seek deeper genuine connection and inspiration with the stories that want to be told by this city. A place and table where new friends are made.
As Amsterdam insiders and folks loving genuine hospitality, we realized there are many places in Amsterdam, that we personally frequent, that breath a beautiful warm-hearted hospitality spirit. Owner operated coffee-places, independent hostels or B&B’s, small bars and breweries, intimate restaurants, specialty stores and markets. And there are many quiet places, corners, chapels, meditative places, parks, green spaces, canal areas, neighborhoods, walks where we tend to find peace in an otherwise increasingly busy city. Very often these places have a unique historic or contemporary story that wants to be told, and have a natural walk that might combine a visit to a few at the part of the day. It is our goal to help you find, walk and cherish these places as much as we do.
